Under the Bridge Furniture Project

Under the Bridge Charity Shop, Heaton Park Road

Homeless charity Under the Bridge runs two second hand furniture shops. One on Heaton Park Road, Heaton, and one on Heaton Terrace, just off Byker Bridge.

They collect donated furniture for free to have your furniture collected ring 0191 2284928

Uniquely, Under the Bridge will collect damaged wooden furniture and small upholstered items which do not have fire labels.
Charity staff fix, recover and restore the furniture with help from volunteers and a team of vulnerable adults who learn woodwork, carving and upholstery skills. Many of the service users would have nothing else regular in their routines to occupy their and provide them with sociable opportunities,
There are currently 14 people engaged in the project. Many of them have come to Under the Bridge through the charities own homeless hostel, Byker Bridge House. Others are refered by mental health or addiction support workers.
They get to chose projects and see them through, with help, from start to finish. As well as learning new skills, it provides routine, boost self esteem and means they are a part of a working team in a caring, fun and creative environment.

Service users, many of which would be unable to find permanent work, also volunteer in the furniture shops helping with sales, displays and delivery.

We aim to keep our furniture prices low and turnover high. We strive to keep as much fit for use furniture as possible away from landfill and host monthly events where furniture which would be sent to the tip is given away for free. Free Furniture Fridays are held on the 4th Friday of each month. For more information see our Facebook page.
